Dark Secrets of Academia and PhD Tips from Eleni Routoula

Dr. Eleni Routoula joins me live to talk about some of the dark secrets of academia.

Eleni says “…I posted a tweet about academic supervisors and I got inspired to create a series on ‘academic secrets,’ spilling the tea on some hot topics in academia that people don’t really discuss, either because it’s inconvenient to touch them, or because if we actually talk about them, then we need to act on them.” So we’re going to get into some of those dark secrets, topics including supervisors, funding, collaboration, researcher support and development, mental health, and academic afterlife. Welcome to The Social Academic. I’m Jennifer van Alstyne, and I talk about your online image in the HigherEd world. And, I interview awesome academics like you.

Eleni Routola, PhD, was born and raised in Greece, but after my first round of studies I moved to the UK for the rest. Having recently finished my PhD (in chemical engineering), I realised that I am very interested in the Higher Education sector and academia, but not necessarily as a researcher or aspiring academic. I thoroughly enjoy any para-academic activity, especially those related to researcher development, employability, navigating the PhD journey, science communication, training, and skills development. I have participated in various networks and committees, received recognition for teaching in Higher Education, organised several events for researchers and academics, or for outreach purposes, and created training content, alongside my PhD research, in an effort to learn, understand, and help towards solving existing problems in academia. Outside academia, I love collecting unique earrings, cuddling with cats, playing with makeup, and exploring different cultures by physical or food-based travelling!
